Whale watching is a relatively new activity in Sierra Leone. Although whales have always traveled through these waters during their annual migration, it was only recently discovered that their path brings them remarkably close to Banana Island. During the peak of the migration season, dedicated whale-watching trips depart from the island, allowing guests to closely observe these magnificent marine mammals. The primary species spotted is the humpback whale, though sperm whales are occasionally sighted as well. The excursions typically last between 2 to 4 hours. Because the season relies entirely on the natural migration patterns of the whales, its duration can vary each year, lasting anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.
