Sport-Fishing

Some of the best fishing holidays worldwide take place in West Africa’s coastal lodges, largely thanks to the incredibly rich fish stocks in the region. The fishing grounds surrounding Banana Island are particularly renowned for their dense populations of native and resident species. Apart from the Guinean barracuda and the tarpon—which both reach world-record sizes in Sierra Leone—the following species are found in abundance: Spanish mackerel, cubera, Atlantic and African pompano, yellowfin jack, cobia, corbina and amberjack. While slightly less frequent, dorado, sailfish and tuna are also regularly caught in the vicinity of our fishing grounds. Trolling and jigging are the preferred methods for most anglers vacationing at Banana Island. However, bottom fishing, fly fishing, and casting also yield a massive variety of catches, from snapper to shark. Spearfishing is equally spectacular here, featuring shallow reefs and clear waters teeming with marine life. Beginners can get started by taking an introductory course on the island to target large fish in shallower waters, while advanced spearos can head out to the deep outer reefs for truly thrilling encounters.
